Like all other foods, milk and dairy products are governed by the Danish Food
Act. The purpose of the Food Act is to
- ensure safe access to healthy and high-quality foods
- protect consumers against health hazards from foods
- protect consumers from misleading food labelling and
marketing
- provide the basis for an effective, coherent and
uniform control of foods from farm to fork
- promote healthy eating habits.
In addition, the Act aims to contribute to providing fair and uniform
conditions to food producers and traders and to promote Danish food
exports.
The Danish food legislation is based on the food legislation of
the European Union. The European trend is that the legal base governing the food
area is changing from directives into regulations. EU regulations apply
immediately and need not be introduced in Danish legislation.
The Danish
Dairy Board safeguards the interests of the dairies in relation to development
of new rules and regulations applying to the sector.
